You Do Not Need to Have Everything Figured Out Before You Start

Table of Contents

If you want to start an online business, there is a strange idea that can keep you from ever building the business you have been thinking about.

They believe they need to have everything figured out first.

The perfect website.

The perfect business model.

The perfect marketing strategy.

The perfect collection of tools.

The perfect plan for what happens six months from now.

And once all of those pieces magically fall into place…

Then they will start.

There is just one problem.

That moment may never come.

I know because LaunchForge Studio did not begin with every piece figured out.

Not even close. 😂

The business you see today has evolved while I have been building it.

Pages have changed.

Ideas have changed.

Tools have been added.

Other ideas have been thrown out.

Marketing strategies have been tested.

Messaging has evolved.

And sometimes something completely unexpected appears that makes me rethink what might be possible.

In fact, one of those moments happened while I was working on LaunchForge today.

More on that in a minute.

Because one of the biggest lessons I am learning while building LaunchForge Studio is this:

You do not always figure out the business and then start building.

Sometimes you start building…

and that is how you figure out the business.

Starting Creates Clarity That Planning Cannot

Planning matters.

I am certainly not suggesting that you wake up tomorrow morning, buy seventeen pieces of software and start clicking buttons until a business appears. 😂

But there is a point where planning stops being preparation and starts becoming procrastination.

You can research websites for months.

You can compare email platforms.

You can study funnels.

You can watch videos about traffic.

You can create business plans.

You can ask AI approximately 4,732 questions.

Eventually, though, you have to build something.

Because the moment you start building, something changes.

Start an online business by taking action and learning as you go

Starting creates opportunities to learn, adjust and make smarter decisions as your business grows.

You begin getting information that planning alone cannot give you.

You discover what feels right.

You discover what is harder than expected.

You discover what you actually need.

You discover what you thought you needed but really do not.

And sometimes you discover opportunities that were completely invisible when you started.

That has happened repeatedly while building LaunchForge Studio.

LaunchForge Did Not Start With Its Current Direction

When I first started developing LaunchForge, I had a general idea of what I wanted the business to become.

Websites.

Marketing.

Automation.

Traffic.

Funnels.

Business tools.

Practical digital solutions.

Those pieces were there.

But the way they would eventually fit together was not completely clear.

And I think that is normal.

You can have a destination in mind without knowing every road you will take to get there.

As I continued building, the direction became clearer.

LaunchForge started becoming less about simply offering services and more about something I found much more interesting:

Actually building the business in public and letting other entrepreneurs learn from the process.

That eventually became:

Follow the build. Learn the tools. Use what works for your own.

I could not have written that philosophy on day one.

I had to build LaunchForge long enough to discover it.

Your Business Is Allowed to Evolve

I think some entrepreneurs are afraid to change direction because they interpret change as evidence that their original idea was wrong.

I look at it differently.

Sometimes changing direction simply means you know more now than you knew when you started.

Online business evolves through action learning and continuous improvement

You do not need every answer before you begin. Take action, learn as you go and adjust when needed.

That is not failure.

That is information.

The website teaches you something.

Your visitors teach you something.

Your marketing teaches you something.

The tools teach you something.

Your mistakes definitely teach you something. 😂

And all of that information gives you an opportunity to make the business better.

Some Ideas Will Work

There are things we have built into LaunchForge that immediately made sense.

The Guides & Tutorials section is a good example.

Instead of simply telling people that LaunchForge is about websites, marketing, traffic, automation and business systems, I can actually document what I am learning and using.

That gives people something useful.

And it gives LaunchForge a growing library of resources instead of just another website explaining what the business does.

Those are the ideas you keep building on.

Some Ideas Will Change

Other ideas begin one way and eventually turn into something better.

That is exactly what happened with the broader direction of LaunchForge.

The original concept leaned more heavily toward a traditional digital-services business.

But as I continued building, I realized I did not want LaunchForge to become another website saying:

Hire me. Hire me. Hire me.

There are plenty of those already.

I became much more interested in showing the process.

What am I actually using?

What am I testing?

What works?

What does not?

What would I do differently?

That change created the Build Along With LaunchForge direction.

The business did not lose direction.

The direction became clearer.

And Some Ideas Belong in the Trash

This is part of building too.

Not every idea deserves to survive. 😂

Sometimes something sounds brilliant in your head and looks considerably less brilliant once you actually try to build it.

That is okay.

I would rather test an idea, learn from it and remove it than spend six months planning around something that never should have existed in the first place.

Building gives you permission to learn.

And learning gives you permission to change.

Sometimes the Next Piece Appears After You Start Building

This brings me back to what happened today.

While working inside the LaunchForge WordPress dashboard, I noticed something I had never seen before.

A new Capture Page plugin connected directly to Profit Hub System.

Well then.

Hello there. 😂

New business opportunities can appear after you start building

Sometimes the next opportunity only becomes visible after you start building, testing and learning.

Profit Hub System is already one of the platforms I use behind LaunchForge Studio, but this was something new.

The plugin had created a standalone Profit Hub capture page directly on the LaunchForge domain.

It could collect leads.

Track those leads inside WordPress.

Connect the visitor to the Profit Hub presentation.

Credit the referral to me.

And eventually it appears that additional autoresponder and webhook integrations are planned as well.

None of this was part of my original LaunchForge plan.

Because I did not know it existed.

So What Did We Do?

We investigated it.

Not:

NEW TOOL! INSTALL EVERYTHING! CHANGE THE ENTIRE BUSINESS! 😂

We looked at what it actually does.

We looked at the settings.

We looked at how leads are recorded.

We looked at what can be customized.

We looked at the integrations that are currently available and the ones marked as coming soon.

And then we asked the question that matters:

Does this have a useful job inside LaunchForge Studio?

Right now, I think it might.

But I do not need to redesign the entire business around it.

I can test it.

See how it performs.

Watch how Profit Hub develops the integration.

And decide where it belongs based on what I learn.

That opportunity only appeared because the business was already being built.

You Can See the Experiment Yourself

Instead of merely describing the new capture page, I can actually show you what I am testing.

See the Profit Hub capture page I am currently exploring →

This is not something I am presenting as the answer to every business problem.

It is simply another piece I discovered while building LaunchForge and something I am currently evaluating to see where it might fit.

And that distinction is important.

You do not need to adopt every new tool you discover.

You need to decide whether that tool helps the business you are already trying to build.

Build the Business Before You Build the Tool Collection

One of the easiest traps in online business is confusing tools with progress.

New software feels productive.

A new funnel builder feels productive.

Another AI platform feels productive.

Another traffic source feels productive.

Another automation feels productive.

And before long you have created an impressive collection of monthly subscriptions…

but not necessarily an impressive business.

I have written before about how to choose the right tools for your online business because this is something I constantly evaluate while building LaunchForge.

My rule is becoming increasingly simple:

Every tool needs a job.

If I cannot explain what problem something solves, why it belongs in the business and how it connects with what I am already doing, I probably do not need it.

That applies to the new Profit Hub capture page too.

The fact that it exists does not automatically mean LaunchForge needs to use it everywhere.

First we determine the job.

Then we decide whether the tool earns its place.

You Can Change the Plan Without Changing the Mission

This is another distinction that has become important to me.

The way you build your business can change without changing why you are building it.

LaunchForge has evolved considerably.

But the underlying mission has remained remarkably consistent.

I want to help entrepreneurs build smarter online businesses.

That can happen through websites.

Marketing.

Automation.

Traffic.

Business systems.

AI.

Practical tutorials.

Or simply sharing something I learned while figuring out my own business.

The methods can evolve.

The mission keeps the business pointed in the right direction.

Think Direction, Not Perfection

You do not need to know exactly where your business will be three years from now.

You need enough direction to take the next useful step.

The U.S. Small Business Administration takes a similar approach to business planning, describing a business plan as something you can adapt throughout your journey rather than create once and never revisit.

Then another.

Then another.

Sometimes that step will confirm what you were already thinking.

Sometimes it will send you in a slightly different direction.

Sometimes it will reveal something you never expected.

That is not necessarily a problem.

That is what building looks like.

AI Has Made This Process Even More Interesting

AI has become a big part of the way I work through these decisions.

And yes, around LaunchForge, my AI building partner has a name.

Forgy.

Of course he does. 😂

I recently wrote an entire guide about how I use AI as a business partner without letting it run my business, because that relationship has become part of the LaunchForge building process.

When I discover something like the new Profit Hub capture page, AI gives me another perspective.

What could we do with this?

Where might it fit?

What should we investigate?

What are we overlooking?

But there is still an important rule.

Forgy does not get to chase every shiny object either. 😂

AI can help me explore possibilities.

I still decide which possibilities become part of LaunchForge.

That combination has made experimentation faster without removing human judgment from the process.

Progress Gives You Something to Improve

There is another reason I believe starting before everything is perfect matters.

You cannot improve something that does not exist.

You can improve a website once the website exists.

You can improve an email once you have written one.

You can improve a funnel once people start moving through it.

You can improve your content once people begin reading it.

You can improve your marketing once you have something to measure.

Before that, you are often improving an idea.

And ideas are very cooperative.

They work perfectly in your imagination. 😂

Reality is where the useful information starts appearing.

Version One Does Not Need to Be Version Forever

This mindset takes a lot of pressure off.

Your first website does not need to be your forever website.

Your first email sequence does not need to be your forever email sequence.

Your first marketing strategy does not need to be your forever marketing strategy.

Build something useful.

Put it into the world.

Learn.

Improve it.

That cycle is much more valuable than waiting indefinitely for a version that is supposedly perfect.

Because perfect has a nasty habit of moving every time you get close to it.

Picky Peter knows all about that one. 😂

Pay Attention to What the Business Is Teaching You

Once you start building, your business begins giving you clues.

Pay attention to them.

Which articles are people reading?

Which emails are getting clicks?

Which pages are confusing?

Which tools are actually saving time?

Which activities seem productive but never produce anything?

Which questions keep coming up?

Which ideas keep pulling the business in a useful direction?

Those clues can help shape what comes next.

That is part of what I am doing with LaunchForge.

I am not following a document written six months ago and refusing to deviate from it.

I am building.

Watching.

Learning.

Adjusting.

And continuing.

You Are Not Behind Because You Are Still Figuring Things Out

Trying to start an online business does not require you to have every answer before you take the first step.

This might be the part someone needs to hear.

If you are building something and you still do not have every answer…

that does not mean you are doing it wrong.

Businesses evolve.

Strategies change.

Technology changes.

Customers change.

You change.

The important thing is whether you are continuing to learn and make better decisions with the information you have.

There will probably always be something you have not figured out yet.

There certainly is with LaunchForge Studio.

I actually think that is part of what makes this fun.

There is always another idea to explore.

Another problem to solve.

Another experiment to run.

Another lesson to learn.

And apparently another Profit Hub plugin waiting inside WordPress when I am not looking. 😂

Start an Online Business With What You Know

You do not need the complete roadmap.

Start with what you know today.

What problem do you want to solve?

Who do you want to help?

What can you build with the skills and resources you already have?

What is the next useful step?

Take that step.

Then pay attention to what happens.

The next decision will probably become clearer because you made the first one.

And eventually you may look back and realize something:

The business did not appear because you finally figured everything out.

You figured more of it out…

because you built the business.

Build Along With LaunchForge

That is exactly what I want this part of LaunchForge Studio to document.

Not some imaginary version of entrepreneurship where every decision works, every tool is perfect and every plan survives first contact with reality.

If you are ready to start an online business, give yourself permission to learn some of it by actually building it.

The actual build.

The ideas.

The changes.

The experiments.

The wins.

The mistakes.

The occasional Picky Peter incident. 😂

And the unexpected discoveries that send us down completely new paths.

If you want to understand more about one of the platforms I am currently using behind the business, you can read my Profit Hub System review and see why it became part of the LaunchForge build.

And as LaunchForge continues evolving, I will keep documenting what happens.

Follow the build. Learn the tools. Use what works for your own.

You do not need to know exactly where every road leads before you begin.

Sometimes you just need enough direction to start moving.

Build something.

Learn something.

Make the next decision smarter than the last one.
